Long time no see...

Hello

This is just a wee quick post.

I just wanted to confirm that I am still alive, just in the meantime since getting married I have een made redundant, had a god awful job search with no success, moved house and had a baby. I would love to get back into this again, we'll see if I ever get the time!

Until (hopefully not so long) next time!

Kitsch Inn

As you may have realised by now, Mr.F and I are completely addicted to eating foo we haven’t made ourselves.
We love going to restaurants or phoning something in. It never takes much to persuade us that eating home cooked food would be wiser. (I reckon about 80% of our free money goes on eating out!)

So one night, after a rather gruelling day at work, we decided to have a wee treat. We both work in the City Centre, meaning there are endless options for us to choose from.

This night we decided to go the Kitsch Inn, at the Tikki Bar on Bath Street.

The food was breathtakingly good!

We had a mixed Thai sharer platter for a starter, which consisted of Chicken Satay, King Prawn tempura, spring rolls and prawn crackers. Served with Dips.

Not a scrap was left!

In particular I loved the prawn tempura. It was crisp and the prawn were cooked perfectly! Tempura had a tendency to turn up to your table soggy and overcooked. This was by far the best tempura I have ever eaten.

We then moved onto the main event.
I had ordered a Massaman Beef Curry, Mr F ordered the Thai Yellow Curry with Coley.

My beef was sublime. I fell apart as you ate, not a scrap of fat and delicately flavoured.

Mr.F’s curry was also very tasty I hear. Not being much of a fish fan, I didn’t try it, but the smell alone made my mouth water and tastebuds tingle!

The best 50p I have ever spent! It was by far the best fried rice I’ve eaten. Ever!

I normally don’t like to be so gushy about places, but the Kitsch Inn just can’t be faulted. The staff are fantastic and friendly, food you want to shout about from the rooftops… and of course there is plenty of rum cocktails on offer. What’s not to love about the place?

And I just have to note, that our whole meal came under the early evening offer, and we only paid about £13 each for two courses. Great value when you consider that Mr.F’s curry is normally £10.20 on its own!

This says it all…

Very very full tummies that night!

Rumours Kopitiam

Our night started with the best of intentions, as good nights always do.

The plan was simple, we’d have some nice dinner, and then have a beer or two.

A few Tequila and Verdita shots later and it was hangover from hell the next day!!

So Mr.F and I met up with my sister and her partner for some nice dinner and a catch up.

We headed to Rumours Kopitiam, on Bath Street.

If you read the reviews on the List, you would think this place has gone downhill, with the rudest waitress in Glasgow at the Helm.

We had a great meal here!

Mr F began with a chicken noodle soup. Very simple but a dish that is fantastic when done well.
Mrs.Sister had some spring rolls to start, again a fantastically simple dish.
Me and Sister shared a plate of Salt and Chilli squid. Sister took a bit of convincing as she isn’t a huge squid fan, however I think this one dish has converted her! The squid was cooked perfectly in its delicious crispy, spicy coating.

For our mains, I ordered the Malaysian Sliced Chicken curry. It was a big portion but super tasty. I asked for them to omit the aubergines as I can’t stand the slimy beasts, however I was not left feeling hungry in their absence.

Sister went for a Kung Po chicken dish.
I didn’t taste this, however I believe this is due to her walloping it down so fast. She clearly enjoyed every mouthful.

Mrs.Sister went for a crispy beef dish. It’s her usual choice, and apparently she had been dreaming about it the night before. Hmmm…

She is a spice addict, and asked for the Beef to be spiced up. She said it was beautiful when it came, however not very spicy. I believe this is due to her deadening her tastebuds with her chilli obsession. I thought it had quite a kick to it!

Mr.F ordered Salt and Chill Soft Shelled crab. These are one of his favourite treats. Very few places seem to serve soft shelled crab that you A) would want to eat B) wouldn’t feel robbed paying for.

This was a good sized portion, and from his silence of 3 minutes, I knew he enjoyed it.

All of this as washed down with some Tsing Tao beers and egg fried rice.

It was a great meal, and we barely spoke to each other during it as the food demanded our full attention!!

With regards to the waitress, she isn’t rude as such, just not very accommodating. Not enough to put you off visiting again for some of that cracking food!

Scored high in the fantastic food rating!!!

The rest of the night (and the tequila) happened in Max’s Bar and Grill.

Lets just say ‘What Happens in Max’s, stays in Max’s’!

Wagamama Silverburn - a tale of caution!

Mr F and I found ourselves down at the Silverburn neck of the woods recently.

As we were about to embark on a Tesco shop (an activity we both find traumatic and usually leave the shop with our relationship in tatters) we decided to fuel up beforehand.

So we headed into Wagamama, got a seat and got menu perusing!

I ordered the Ebi Gyoza and Chicken Raisukare, Mr.F went for Duck Gyoza and Yaki Soba. So far so good, or that’s what we thought!

So after a wee while, I comment to Mr.F saying that its unusual for food to sit out, whilst I eyed up a plate that had been lying on the counter for over 5 minutes. The waitress then picked this up and put it in front of me.

Lukewarm but tasty…

However, I soon realised that as tasty as my £10 treat was, there were two bits of chicken in it! Which I was bit peeved at, so I spoke to waitress who arranged to get me some more chicken cooked and some extra sauce. She did offer to take it and get a fresh one for me, but the hunger pangs kept me gripping tightly onto the plate that contained that rich cocnutty sauce!

So disaster one, kind of averted.

Then came the sized. They were rock solid and inedible. They really were a perfect waste of good food.

That was disaster two!

Then came disaster 3! Mr.F’s lunch arrived. It looked a wee bit darker than usual but seemed ok. However once he began eating it, it became clear that the chef had burnt the oil that it had been cooked in, giving the whole dish a burnt smoky flavour. It was also very sparse on the meat too!

He was getting rather pissed off at this point, and my taking pictures of things didn’t help, so I have no picture of his meal unfortunately!

As we were about to say to some staff, we heard the manager screeching on her way past “is that the 6th ‘hing to get sent back in 5 minutes”. Just as the girl next to us sent her meal back.

Tesco shop looming, we decided to quit while we were ahead and give up on the whole fiasco!

I have however emailed Wagamama today, to see what they have to say for themselves.

Hopefully I shall be following this up with a ‘aren’t they lovely…’ post!

South Light Chinese take out

Mr.F and I had a crazy weekend, and as it was our 3 month wedding anniversary, we decided push the boat out and have a take out!

We were down in Pollok house sitting, so ran up to the local Chinese.

What happened next was horrific. We were starving and barely used cutlery!
Fantastic food though!

On clearing up we discovered this in bag the food came in...

Ever so slightly worrying, eh?

Something to think about while digesting!

Best Eggs Benedict

Just a quick one.

Having recently had breakfast with my mum at Frankie and Bennys, I have to say, they do the best Eggs Benedict I've ever had.

Awesome!!

Take out, made in.

I'm a total sucker for take out food.
I always tell myself it's been ages since I had it, I can afford it, I deserve a treat...or any other excuse I can think of!

Having had a day when I wanted take out, but couldn't afford it, I had to improvise.

Having got a couple of reduced chicken breasts, I decided on chicken fried rice.

It's the simplest recipe, or mine is, I don't know how other people make it!

I fried up some sliced chicken, onions and mushrooms in garlic, ginger, sesame oil, Chinese 5 spice and soy sauce. In the meantime I had the rice steamer cooking up some plain White rice.

When that was almost cooked I chucked in a handful of frozen peas.

Then I tipped all that out into a bowl, and scrambled an egg in the wok. Next I piled in the drained rice with some more sesame oil.

While that was frying I fried some big chunky onions and made a curry sauce using a curry paste

While the curried onions reduced down, I put the chicken and veg mix back into the fried rice, seasoned with soy sauce and lots if black pepper, then warmed through.

I dished up with the curry as a side.

Very tasty with the rice.

A nice cheap meal, which felt like a good treat.

Fantastic!

Goodnoms at Wudon

After my last soap making class, and a couple of well earned pints in the Belle on Great Western Road, Mr.F and I decided to venture into Wudon for dinner.

We have been a few times before, and have always enjoyed it. However we have been banished to the Southside of Glasgow, meaning less and less time in the West End for us.

After being seated by a very friendly member of staff, we poured over the rather tasty looking menu.

I decided on having the Original Ramen, minus the seaweed and fish ball. Not a fishy fan.

Original Ramen

Mr.F decided to have a variety of wee plates, going for Wor Teep, Teriyaki Beef,

Wor Teep and Teriyaki Beef

boiled rice and Dragon Sushi.

Dragon Sushi

And my favourite, the Ga Lay Kwok

All in all, it was a fabulous meal, coming in under the £25 price mark, tasty!!

Plates almost licked clean!!!

I would highly recommend Wudon for the casual diner to the fancy meal. The staff are great, the food is outstanding and all this authentic Asian food comes with a very reasonable price tag!

More spinach treats

Not posted in a while, that pesky wedding kept me busy!

So as I seem to be turning into the worlds biggest spinach fan, I thought I'd do a wee post about my loverly pie.

I was working weird hours in a rather horrific job, and needed something tasty to fill me up on my break, so I thought I would make my nice spinach and feta pie.

My recipe is mostly made up, however my method is stolen from Jamie Oliver!

Its super simple, basically I sautee and onion then chuck in loads of spinach and wilt it right down.
While all that's happening, I crumble a packet of feta into a bowl and mix with an egg, some grated parmesan, freshly ground pepper and a good grating of nutmeg.
Then when the spinach is wilted and cooled, ix the whole lot up.

I then wipe out the frying pan, coat lightly with olive oil and put in some filo pastry sheets. Pop in the spinach then tuck the filo sheets over the top. Coat it well with olive oil.
I start cooking i on the hob, just for a minute or so to get the bottom of the pie cooking, then bang the whole thing in the oven for about 20 minutes.
(If your doing this, please make sure your using a metal handles pan and that its OVEN SAFE!)

20 Minutes later, you have a gorgeous pie ready to dig into!! The pie keeps for a few days in the fridge, so you can eat it for a few lunches, or just have a big slice with a salad or baked potato for dinner. Yummmm!!!

Hen Night Noms

So my Hen Night was on Saturday.

Many culinary delights where had!

It began by meeting with my Bridesmaids at The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgows Central Station.
We opted for an afternoon tea with a glass of bubbly. What a treat!

We had smoked salmon, cucumber, ham and cheese dainty sandwiches, followed by scones, cakes and flapjacks. I smothered everything in clotted cream! It was divine!

The bubbly was certainly very yummy as well!

After another glass in AdLib, we then headed to Kudos on Waterloo street.

We had a fabulous Harry Potter themed night including a murder mystery.

I'm focusing more on the food here though.

The dinner was divine! £13 a head for a three course meal. Our meal was a set menu, I was asked to choose 4 selections from each each course.

(I made some harry potter themed menus!)

I had the pate, followed by the chicken stuff with Haggis. It was outstanding!!
Some warm apple pie with ice cream finished off the meal, yummy!

I cannot find fault with Kudos, what a fabulous night we all had with laid back staff, our own bar and that delish food.

Now, back to my 2-day recovery plan (lot of Peroni washed down that food!)
